Founded in 1733 on the Savannah River, Savannah is the oldest city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the county seat of Chatham County. It served as both the British colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and the initial state capital of Georgia. Throughout the American Revolution and the American Civil War, Savannah played an important role as a port city, and today it is a major industrial hub and Atlantic seaport. With a population of 147,780 people according to the census, Savannah is the fifth-largest city in Georgia, while the Savannah metropolitan region, Georgia's third-largest, was home to 404,798 people in 2020.

Every year, Savannah welcomes millions of visitors who come to see its unique blend of cobblestone streets, green parks, and historical landmarks. Among these landmarks are some of the most noteworthy structures in the city, including the Georgia Historical Society, which has been operating continuously as a historical society in the South for over a century, the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the first public museums in the Southern United States, and the Centennial Building. Other notable buildings in Savannah include the First African Baptist Church and the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA. Low was born in the oldest standing antebellum rail facility in the United States, which has been converted into a museum and visitor center.
